Poultry farmers rush to get the new Kurolier chicken breed

Poultry farmers in Kenya are now in a rush to get a new chicken breed known as Kuroiler. The breed which allegedly originated from India is said to have bigger eggs, more weight and is resistant to diseases.

Poultry farmers say that the Kurolier looks like the normal indigenous chicken, but its far much better. At 6 months, a Kurolier cock can weigh up to 3 kilograms  unlike the local ones that weigh 1.5 kilos while at the same age. Their eggs are also visibly bigger as compared to those of local chicken.

Most farmers are travelling long distances to get hold of the Kuroilers- as far as Uganda. But this is not in vain; the farmers claim that on can collect up to 270 eggs per chicken per year. They say that the breed is free range and does not need to be fed with commercial feeds. Its also resistant to diseases.

Those who have already ventured in to rearing the breed highly recommend it over the local kienyeji breed.

Researchers at the Kenya Agricultural and livestock Research Organization (KALRO) have said that they can not validate the farmers’ claims as they have not done any research on the breed that is spreading fast, just like the infamous quail.
