Mike Sonko says he is innocent as he steps aside. He wants other leaders to follow suit
The Senator for Nairobi, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, had lately been mounting pressure on Nairobi governor Dr Evans Kidero over alleged corruption in Mumias Sugar company and City hall; little did he know that his name was among the list of 175 individuals named in the EACC list of shame

The flamboyant senator who is not new to controversy has been accused of being involved in the irregular awarding of a tender at the Kenya Pipeline Company. The senator has now decided to hid president Kenyatta’s directive for all those implicated in the report to step aside.
In a statement to news rooms, Sonko says he has stepped aside as the senate majority deputy chief whip and a member of the roads and transport, national security and foreign relations committees. He has also requested senate speaker Ekwe Ethuro to be exempted from all sessions for the next two months until he is cleared by the EACC.
“I have no influence over KPC and its procurement system. KPC is a state cooperation with a respectable management team and a board of directors. I serve none. The only connection I have with the cooperation is that its headquarter is in the county of Nairobi where I am the senator” Said Sonko while defending himself against claims of corruption.
Sonko has also claimed that he has never been informed of any corrupt deeds by EACC or summoned to record a statement. Sonko has challenged other elected leaders implicated in graft, including governor Kidero to step aside.
His action followed Tuesday’s decision by Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba to step aside as the chairman of public accounts committee and seek leave from parliamentary sessions for two months until his name is cleared
