JKUAT students to pay Sh 135 Million for strike damages

Students of JKUAT Juja will be paying an additional Sh 5,200 on top of their regular tuition fees. This is for the damage caused on the institution’s facilities during the strike two weeks ago.

The fine applies to every single student in the entire university regardless of their participation in the riots

With over 26,000 students registered in the university, the totoal bill amounts to a little over Sh 135 Million. While on one hand the school may be using the fee as a deterrent to future strikes or riots, Sh 135 Million seems like a lot of money for broken glass. Some students have raised concerns and are saying that there is lack of accountabilty and the university can not explain what all that money is for. They also expressed concerns that the fine is unfair to thousands of students who had nothing to do with the strike

JKUAT students took to the Juja streets hurling stones and breaking university windows in protest of a new policy introduced that requires them to pay half of the school fees required within the first month of every semester and the entire amount by the eight week

The students claimed most of them could not afford to do that and said the new policy was arrived at after some students engaged in fraudulent acts. A section of the students had collueded with some local bank officials to issue them with bank slips that showed they had paid tuition fees while in reality they had not. As a result of the fraudulent activities, the institution had started suffering major losses; hence the new policy
