JKUAT students ordered by High Court to pay Sh 5,200 each.
On November 3rd, Jommo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) went on the rampage. Their bone of contention; a new policy that require students to clear their fee balances or leave the university premises within hours.

After a night of violence, property worth millions of shillings both inside and outside the campus was destroyed. The administration closed the university indefinitely and sent the students home. Each JKUAT student is now required to pay a mandatory fine of Sh 5,200 before reporting back to class and clear the outstanding fees balance.
This comes after the High Court decline to grant an injunction stopping the university from imposing the fine. The over 15,000 students had contested the total amount of Sh 78 Million saying its too high compared to the damages that were caused.
High Court judge Weldon Kirui declined to grant the injunction and ordered the students to pay the fines awaiting a ruling on the case. At the moment, only first year and final year students have resumed studies at the university.
The case will be heard in January 2015
