TSC probes St. Charles Lwanga Ichuni’s prison cells
The Teachers Service Commission has launched investigations after it emerged that St. Charles Lwanga Ichuni girls secondary school in Kisii has prison cells where students facing disciplinary cases are held for up to two weeks.
The cells depict a government correctional facility, and the girls are forced to sleep on the cold floor naked, in the small room which has no bed or toilet. Sometimes, water is poured on the floor and the girls are forced to relieve themselves in plastic tins in the cell that can hold up to 10 girls for a period of two weeks. According to the parents, girls end up in the cells if they break school rules.
There are two of those cells in the school. The matter was highlighted by The Daily Nation Newspaper and now the Teachers Service Commission has launched a probe.
The school administration has however denied using the cells to detain students who have committed disciplinary offences and subjecting them to cruelty and degrading treatment. Parents who reported the matter to journalists fear that their daughters will be victimized and want the ministry of education to intervene
