Modern Dialysis clinic opened in Nyeri Town
Residents of Nyeri County are lucky lot. A private investor has opened a new dialysis clinic in Nyeri town that will help reduce the number patients who travel long distances to seek the service
The clinic has seven dialysis machines that will handle 14 patients every day. The owner of the new clinic, Wanjiku, says that each machine will handle two patients per day.
There has been a rise in cases of renal problems in Nyeri county. The county’s health executive attributes this rise in Kidney related health issues to diabetes which is rampant in most parts of Central Kenya
A study released by the Kenya Renal Association shows that at least one out of every 10 Kenyans is suffering from some form of kidney disease, with 10,000 people dying annually from kidney related complications. Experts have warned that the number is likely to rise by 17% over the next 10 years unless its classified as a global public health challenge
Even as studies show the intensity of this problem, access to dialysis for Kidney patients in Kenya is very hard. In private hospitals, the cost of dialysis is very high, while in public hospitals, the waiting period for a patient to be put on dialysis ranges from over half a year. Each dialysis session costs between Sh 4,500 to Sh 15,000 or even more depending on the hospital. Some patients require a dialysis session every day
