The fourth generation plates will have similar features to those on the third generation, apart from the quality of the material used and the security features which are incorporated in to the bar codes of the new plates

“The features that we are looking at are whereby you can see a traffic offender and link you to the database to identify the owner of the specific vehicle and the offence committed.” Said Lenku during the launch of the machines will make the 4th generation plates at the Kamiti maximum prison.

Motorists will also have an option of customizing their number plates but at a higher fee of up to Sh 2 million. Those with the ordinary 4th generation plates will pay Sh 4,000 up from Sh 2,000.

Lenku said that the Ministry of Transport and the Interior ministry are working together to agree on the modalities of roll out and how the news plates will be integrated in to the various databases in KRA.

Once rolled out, all number plates will have to be changed. They will be placed on the usual rear and front parts of the vehicle and a bar code with the security features will also be placed on the wind screen.

The project which is expected to boost revenue generation in the prison and make it self reliant is expected to reign in on insecurity and traffic offences
