Eight witnesses to testify in the case against Deputy President William Ruto and Joshua Arap Sang
The ICC appeals chamber has ruled that trial judges will compel eight witnesses to testify in the case against deputy president William Ruto and radio presenter, Joshua Arap Sang
The decision now means that eight unwilling witnesses will testify against Ruto and his co-accused, Josuha Sang. While making the decision, the judges termed the defence submissions as not persuasive and upheld the trial chamber’s decision to compel the eight witnesses to appear.
William Ruto and Joshua Sang’s defense team had opposed the appearance of the eight witnesses who dropped out in the case. They have been the subject of back and forth legal tussle between the Hague based court and the Kenyan government which says that the international crimes act only tells the government to issue sermons and not facilitate the appearance of witnesses.
Regarding President Kenyatta’s case, the head of public affairs at the ICC Fadi El Abdallah has said that Kenyans will have to wait a little longer before the fate of the president’s case is known. “The decision will made by the judges, but there is no deadline that has been announced at this stage. So we don’t know when the decision will be made.” Said Fadi Abdallah
President Kenyatta made a historic appearance at the court as a first sitting head of state. There is anxiety as the court awaits to reveal the status of cooperation in Kenyatta’s case
