8 killed, 6 injured in accident along Mai Mahiu- Narok road

Eight people have lost their lives and six others are in critical condition following a road accident involving a lorry that was ferrying sand along the Mai Mahiu- Narok road.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the lorry which was on high speed was trying to avoid hitting a motor cyclist and lost control. The lorry was carrying 13 sand harvesters who were buried in the sand when the lorry rolled. Five died on the spot and three others succumbed on the way to hospital.

It took members of the public more than one hour to rescue the men who were trapped under the lorry

The driver and the conductor escaped with minor injuries during the Wednesday 5 pm incident that caused a major traffic snarl up on the busy highway. According to area residents, all those who died were from a newly formed pole pole youth group from Mai Mahiu

The residents further called on the government to mark the specific area as a black spot. Last year, an accident involving a saloon car and a sand truck occurred on the same spot killing five people and injuring scores of others.
